Day 12: Cameron's Auburn Ale
Needed this one. Halfway through. Still very much enjoying the process and the discovery, but not necessarily enjoying the last few beers. This one may be a tie with Moose Knuckle for my favourite so far. Both from Canadian brewers. Coincidence? Not likely, eh.
This really is an "auburn" ale. Not amber, not red, not brown. Auburn describes the reddish, dark bronze colour here. It smells great. Hops are noticeable, bitter, floral and citrus. Nicely balanced and not overpowering. Balanced with what? The taste. What taste? The BEER taste.
This stuff tastes like beer. It isn't trying to get attention by peacocking with extreme flavours. No off the charts bitterness or sweetness or roast. Just beer. Only really good. I was sipping this side by side with some Alexander Keith's, which I've mentioned that I quite like. Just as drinkable, but more flavour, more complexity and just a little more bite.
I looked up Cameron's website afterwards, and the Auburn has won multiple awards. Not a surprise. This may be the craft brew for the masses. I know that's slightly oxymoronic depending on what qualifies as a craft brew, but I'd like to see this stuff arrive on a shelf near me. I'm hesitant to rate it higher than the Mooseknuckle, because they are so different and it's been several days in between. So a six and a half for the Auburn Ale as well!
Oh, and um...
...just so you know.
